WHAT DOES A TAX EXAMINING TECHNICIAN DO? As a Tax Examining Technician, you will apply your knowledge of tax laws, examination techniques, and business practices to examine a variety of tax returns to determine taxpayer's tax liabilities. Your actions will support the IRS mission of determining and collecting the proper amount of tax revenues in a fair and equitable manner.
As a Tax Examining Technician you will:
Examine individual income tax returns and related schedules to determine if reported income, deductions and credits are proper, supported by documentation, and conform to tax laws and regulations. Ensure tax returns include necessary forms and schedules, complete with supporting documentation, and computes applicable income, deductions, and taxes owed.
Compare prior year's tax return to current year tax returns for questionable differences in taxable income, deductions, credits, and liabilities to verify and ascertain accuracy, and makes the necessary adjustments. Conduct tax research to stay abreast of applicable tax law changes or updates. Maintain tax law reference material for the specific purpose of determining a taxpayer's tax liability.
Correspond with taxpayers to resolve discrepancies, develop information and secure substantiation in assigned tax cases; inform taxpayers concerning the nature of financial records necessary to complete tax audits. Notify taxpayers, explain errors, and compute additional taxes, refunds, penalties and/or interest as appropriate.
Prepare work papers to document case actions, verify income and expense items, reconcile financial transactions, analyze expenses and assets, and trace income sources and movements. Recommend and assist higher graded tax examiners in more difficult and complex cases such as tax shelters and multi-entity operations.
If you are selected at the Field Assistance entry option, in addition to the duties described above you will also be required to:
Communicate effectively with taxpayers, providing information and assistance, and identifying and responding to the need for more extensive services. Apply communication techniques in responding to taxpayers who may be hostile, abusive, distraught or fearful in order to answer questions, resolve issues, or refer the taxpayers to appropriate services and personnel. Inform taxpayers of all applicable procedures, policies, and legal regulations, and assures fair, equitable and courteous treatment, even when advising the taxpayer of his/her rights and responsibilities under the law.
Initiate direct contact with taxpayers via correspondence, phone or personal visit. Educate taxpayers, provide them with guidance and clarification of tax laws and provide instruction and information that helps taxpayers understand and comply with federal tax laws and regulations.
Coordinate appointments and workflow to ensure accurate and timely service. Ensure sufficient resources (forms, publications, etc.) are readily available and effectively promotes their use through handouts and publications and the Internet.
