The duty location of this position is in Burns, Oregon. Burns is the County seat and is in Harney County located in southeastern Oregon. The work requires a vehicle operation and safety; physical exertion; moderate risks and discomforts associated with seasonal weather and/or working outdoors, in meetings or in areas with confined workspace, poor lighting or in otherwise adverse situations; interpersonal skills, analytical thinking skills, and writing and speaking skills to convey complicated data and facts. There are hotels/motels; grocery store, a variety of restaurants and limited retail establishments; one movie theatre; golf course, bowling alley, aquatic center and library in Burns.

As a Range Management Specialist, you will:
Inspect rangeland. Recommend action to comply with Bureau range regulations. Use rangeland tools, e.g., grazing permit/agreement records, allotment information/files, stocking rates, utilization, management practices, seasonal use periods, trend data, monitoring records, and environmental documents such as activity plans, allotment evaluations, and biological assessments.
Process range management data from a variety of sources to determine compliance, document vegetation use, and estimate annual forage production, etc.
Monitor range vegetation, and soil resource data to document vegetative use, determine trend, and monitor ground cover for site stability.
Conduct evaluations of livestock operations and rangeland. Meet with range user. Monitor management practice for effective grazing utilization and conformance with standards and guidelines for rangeland health.
Assess compliance of individual and/or coordinated grazing management programs/permits/allotments. Evaluate vegetative resources to establish whether management practices and activities are conforming with guidelines for rangeland health.
Resolve minor conflicts over such issues as season of use, kind and class of livestock, stocking rates, improvement needs, and other operational procedures between Bureau and individuals or organized user groups; prepare enforcement orders in cases where damage or use continues without authorization. Assist other team members to plan/coordinate rangeland development/improvement projects. Install, operate, and maintain project related equipment.
Physical Demands: Field work is performed outdoors, often in rough terrain and inclement weather. May require considerable walking over uneven surfaces; carrying light to moderately heavy packs and equipment, or operating a 4-wheel drive vehicle, ATV or similar transportation; bending; stooping; lifting; climbing; crawling; reaching; and similar activities in connection with range management duties.
Work Environment: The work is performed in an office setting, in vehicles, and in outdoor settings that include rugged and diverse terrain, adverse weather conditions, and possible exposure to hazards. May include potential exposure to fumes, irritants, or toxic substances. The work involves regular and recurring exposure to moderate risks or discomforts associated with work environment that require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, carts, or machines; exposure to contagious diseases; and irritant or discomfort elements.
