Duties

As a HYDRAULIC ENGINEER at the GS-0810-11/12 some of your typical work assignments may include:

Plans, designs, and coordinates hydraulic engineering work for projects in connection with the construction, operation, maintenance, and repair of existing and proposed river, harbor and/or flood control projects. Independently carries out the design of hydraulic features, such as flood control structures, spillways, outlet works, navigation locks, flood diversion structures, river training structures, hydraulic models and stilling basins. The design work often requires that the hydraulic engineer must interpret basic hydrologic data or the work products of others such as estimates of design flood hydrographs.
Performs hydraulic analyses in order to develop alternatives and to evaluate the impacts of proposed projects on water quality, channel stability, sedimentation, scour, water distribution, and navigation, and other environmental aspects.
Provides technical guidance and resolves difficult or complex design problems of assigned projects. Incumbent independently evaluates, selects and applies a variety of standardized hydraulic engineering methods, procedures and techniques in accomplishing projects; may provide innovative solutions in situations that lack definitive precedence. Prepares technical documents such as design memoranda and reports to justify design decisions or recommendations and support hydraulic studies or analyses.
Maintains contact with individuals from outside organizations who have a need for information pertaining to current programs/projects being carried out. Work involves participation as a technical member of interagency project study groups and/or the presentation of material concerning hydraulic investigations before professional meetings, governmental and public audiences.
