The Accountant Analyst performs various financial and accounting activities, including the more complex tasks such as maintaining general ledger accounts, revenue/expense/fixed asset accounting, or preparing reports in accordance with internal policies and procedures and/or accounting principles.
KEY FUNCTIONS
ACCOUNTING:
Conducts moderately complex analyses and reviews of accounting transactions in general ledger; interprets complex and/or new accounting guidance or financial standards and advises the accounting specialist team and relevant stakeholders to implement.
Participates and ensures compliance of SOX (internal) controls.
REPORTING:
Compiles and analyzes financial information to prepare reports in a variety of media.
Generates and provides supporting documentation/information for the year-end audit performed by external auditors.
Completes external surveys on the center's financial activities (e.g. IPEDS).
Assists with regulatory filings such as tax exemption forms and census surveys, in accordance with all applicable regulations.
Completes and distributes monthly operational budget statements, monitors variances to ensure integrity of accounting entries and data, reviews discrepancies, and initiates/conducts corrections.
Maintains contact with other departments to obtain information and/or correct transactions; prepares summary financial reports and presents to the department director/administrator and the dean of research or their designee for discussion and guidance.
Provides supporting data for preparation of the budget; identifies opportunities to contain or reduce costs.
Collaborates with all departments as appropriate to collect and/or report financial information; responds to internal questions relating to financial transactions, statements, or reports.

Assists with ensuring that the internal accounting controls are enforced; assists with identifying accounting irregularities/discrepancies and recommends and/or initiates corrective action; researches items for compliance (state law, MD Anderson policy and/or GAAP) as needed.
Performs account reconciliations as assigned.
Collaborates on the analysis of cost and revenues, reporting, planning and audit of accounts. Works on assignments that are moderately complex in nature, where judgment is required in resolving problems and making recommendations.
May direct the activities of accounting support staff or student workers, as assigned.
