The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is a humanitarian, non-governmental, non-profit organization founded in 1956 that works in more than 30 countries around the world. DRC assists refugees and internally displaced persons throughout the world by providing: direct assistance, emergency aid, and psychosocial support, advocacy, training and capacity building assistance and camp management.

Danish Refugee Council started operating in Iraq in 2003, and is today operational in the majority of the country, with a mix of emergency and longer-term programming. DRC has 1,700 staff and offices in Nine governorates: Baghdad, Anbar, Diyala, Kirkuk, Salahalddin, Ninewa, Duhok, Erbil, and Sulaymaniyah.

DRC is committed to basic income to support the wellbeing of its humanitarian staff. In addition to salary, humanitarian staff in Iraq also receive basic income (allowances) to cover the cost of living and transport in their place of work.

About the job

DRC seeks to employ a dynamic and motivated Protection Officer to assist the implementation of protection activities in Erbil Governorate, Iraq. DRC’s Protection Programme covers a variety of humanitarian assistance and services including child protection, gender-based violence and psychosocial support in addition to conducting advocacy and outreach. The Protection Officer will be supervised by the Protection Team Leader.

Responsibilities:

Carry out household-level protection needs assessments; conduct individual interviews and focus group discussions.
Implement protection-related monitoring and data collection activities.
Maintain regular contact with community focal points.
Provide referrals to vulnerable Persons of Concern to relevant service providers for assistance including legal aid, psycho-social support, livelihoods support, shelter assistance etc.
Document cases in need of specific assistance in compliance with DRC procedures and guidelines.
With support from the Protection Team Leader, establish and maintain constructive working relationships with other NGO, UN agencies, government authorities and community members.
Provide basic protection awareness sessions and counseling to beneficiaries and community members; plan, prepare, and deliver these sessions.
When requested by the Protection Team Leader, accompany project visitors to project sites and introduce DRC’s protection work.
Perform other duties as directed by the Protection Team Leader.

About you

To be successful in this role we expect you to hold relevant academic qualifications in social work, law or related degree from a recognized institution, coupled with experience from working as a project assistant or community outreach. Moreover, we also expect the following:

Qualifications

Minimum of one year of relevant experience working with refugees and internally displaced populations.
Good understanding of local context, and proven analytical skills.
Computer literacy including MS Word, and MS Excel
Knowledge and understanding of humanitarian principles and child protection standards

Languages:

Fluency in written and spoken Arabic, Kurdish and English is required

Conditions

Contract: 6 months with possibility of extension, subject to funding
Salary and conditions will be in accordance with Danish Refugee Council’s Terms of Employment for National Staff
