Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, the Student Nurse Extern assumes responsibilities that complement the RN's role in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Nursing Department.
A day in the life of a Student Nurse Extern at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
Assisting the RN with patient care in providing comfort and hygiene to patients including skin care, bathing, oral hygiene, back rubs and linen changes.
Monitoring vital signs on routine patient populations.
Obtaining blood pressures and non-invasive oxygen saturation.
Obtaining and performing blood glucose monitoring and urine dipstick test.
Transporting patient via wheelchair or stretcher to different areas as needed.
Reinforcing health education under the direction of an RN.
Assisting patients in transferring, lifting and turning including usage of appropriate transfer devices as appropriate to level of experience.
Utilizing approved communication techniques to discuss patient activities or events which include documentation into appropriate records.
Observing and recording patient data related to the patient's physical, mental and emotional condition and accurately report findings and unusual observations to RN for evaluation.
Collecting, labeling and transporting specimens to laboratory under the direction of an RN.
Responding to call bells in a timely and courteous manner and deliver request or relay message to the appropriate health care team member.
Cleaning equipment following established hospital procedures including emptying drainage bags.
Answering telephone calls.
Organizing, restocking and distributing supplies/equipment.
Maintaining a neat and orderly work area.
Participating in performance improvement and patient safety activities as well as attend mandatory programs.
Documenting and verifying all services and education activities using Horizon, HMS, Soarian.
Administering enemas and douches in stable patients only.
Performing simple sterile procedures with close supervision such as straight catheterization of an uncomplicated male patient or set up a sterile field using basic aseptic technique and guidelines.
Following infection control policies and safety guidelines to provide a safe working environment for self and others.
