The School of Sport and Exercise Science is looking to recruit a fixed-term researcher to support the delivery of an externally funded research project in COVID-19/Long COVID. You will support the project chief investigator and be responsible for data collection and day-to-day management and delivery of the project, which includes liaising and working closely with project partners.

The key focus for this post will be to work alongside clinical teams to determine the effectiveness of an anti-viral drug that is administered intravenously Long COVID patients and the impact of their symptoms/pathophysiology. The research will quantify changes via detailed screening and symptom reporting, cardiopulmonary exercise testing (inclusive of ECG and blood pressure) and a detailed pre and post-testing and intervention biochemical profile.

Principal accountabilities

Research/Scholarship

Lead the delivery of research that aligns with the Research Centre / Units of Assessment or College strategy and make a significant and sustained impact on knowledge and understanding that contributes to the University research environment. The key focus for this post will be to work alongside clinical teams to determine the effectiveness of an anti-viral drug that is administered intravenously Long COVID patients and the impact of their symptoms/pathophysiology. The research will quantify changes via detailed screening and symptom reporting, cardiopulmonary exercise testing (inclusive of ECG and blood pressure) and a detailed pre and post-testing and intervention biochemical profile.

Publish research findings through leading peer-reviewed national and international publications and conferences.

Disseminate research outputs by engaging with the public through the internet, the media or other appropriate formats.

Lead on sustained and impactful activity in knowledge transfer and business engagement that benefits the Research Centre or College and contributes to significant policy development at national and international level, and / or develops industrial links, networks and initiatives.

Take a leading role in project managing research activities, including supervising other research staff.

Teaching/Learning

Contribute to appropriate teaching and learning programmes so that research informs and inspires a research led curriculum and teaching.

Leadership/Management

Coach and mentor peers and colleagues in order to develop their research techniques, chair committees at Research Centre and College level where required and play a leading role in developing external networks.

Undertake appropriate training and staff development.

Other

Actively seek out and develop opportunities for interdisciplinary research both across the University and externally.

Influence leading edge practice and seek to maximise income generation by building on, and developing, external networks with organisations such as funding and professional bodies, employers and other educational and research institutions.

Contribute to the management of quality, audit and external assessments.

Understand own development needs and formulate a personal development plan.

Person specification

Essential Criteria

Qualifications

Good Honours Degree in clinical exercise science/physiology or equivalent

PhD or equivalent in clinical exercise science/physiology

Subject-specific qualifications / knowledge (e.g., NIHR Good Clinical Practice/Venepuncture and Cannulation Training)

Experience

Experience of delivering and working in a clinical exercise physiology research role

An appropriate level of digital capability with practical experience of applications

Demonstrable experience in generating research or knowledge exchange income

Evidence of sufficient breadth or depth of knowledge in the discipline to develop research programmes and methodologies

Evidence of high-level peer esteem through an excellent and sustained record of peer-reviewed research publications

Evidence of an excellent UK and emerging international reputation reflected through innovative, high-quality outputs

Experience in managing substantial research programmes and research teams

Evidence of sustained and successful contribution to the corporate life of a Research Centre / College / University through contribution to committees, knowledge transfer and management tasks

Skills, knowledge & abilities

Confident in delivering, analysing and interpreting clinical exercise physiology assessments such as cardiopulmonary exercise tests

Demonstrable research skills, with the ability to design, conduct and project manage original research in the discipline area(s)

Demonstrable ability to exercise a high degree of innovation and creative problem-solving in a research context

Demonstrable ability to communicate complex information clearly both in writing and presentations

Analytical ability to facilitate conceptual thinking, innovation and creativity

Strong ability to build relationships and work collaboratively with colleagues, internally and externally

Demonstrate a good understanding of research ethics, research governance procedures and good research practice
